2.3 Green Chemistry Flashcards
Carbon Neutrality
Means that a chemical process such as fuel combustion does not lead to an overall increase in CO2 levels.
What is Biomass?
Is plant or animal material used for energy production
Solar Power
Is a renewable source of energy generated by the light emitted by our sun
Nuclear Power
Is a non-renewable source that generates electricity
What are the six main functions of green chemistry ?
Renewable Raw Materials, Saving Energy, High Atom Economies, Catalysts, Toxic Materials and Solvents, Biodegradable Products
Renewable Raw Materials
Using renewable raw materials such as plant based compounds whenever possible
Saving Energy
Using as little energy as possible in reactions and getting this energy from renewable sources
High Atom Economy
Using methods having high atom economy so that a high percentage ends up in the product
Catalysts (not definition)
Developing better catalysts and biocatalysts
How does green chemistry effect the use Toxic Materials and Solvents?
Avoiding their use when ever possible
How are Biodegradable products used in green chemistry?
Making products that are biodegradable at the end of their useful lives
