2.2 Prokaryotic Cells Flashcards
What does the cell wall do?
protect and maintain the shape of the cell
What protects and maintains the shape of the cell?
cell wall
What is the cell wall composed of?
peptidoglycan
Where is the plasma membrane?
inside cell wall
What does the plasma membrane do?
controls movement of substances in and out of cell
What controls movement of substances in and out of cell?
plasma membrane
What is the pili?
hair-like growths on outside of cell wall
What are the hair-like growths on outside of cell wall?
pili
What are the pili used for?
Used for attachment, mainly to other cells to prepare for transfer of DNA (sexual reproduction)
What is used for attachment, mainly to other cells to prepare for transfer of DNA (sexual reproduction)?
pili
What is flagella used for?
motility
What is used exclusively for motolity?
flagella
Is flagella present in all bacterial cells?
No
What occurs in cytoplasm?
all cell functions because there is no compartamentalization
What are ribosomes the site of?
protein synthesis
Where is the site of protein synthesis?
ribosomes
What is the nucleoid region?
Area of the cell containing free floating, continuous, circular DNA thread
Where is the area of the cell containing free floating, continuous, circular DNA thread ?
nucleoid region
How do prokaryote cells divide?
binary fission
What happens during binary fission?
DNA is copied, two daughter chromosomes attach to different parts of plasma membrane, then the cell divides. Division occurs through cell elongation and a protein called FtsZ that partitions new DNA
