2.2 DNA replication Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 4 requirements for semi-conservative replication?
A
- 4 types of nucleotides
- both strands of DNA molecule act as a template for attachment of nucleotides
- DNA polymerase
- source of chemical energy
2
Q
What does DNA helicase do?
A
it unzips the DNA strand by the hydrogen bonds between the bases
3
Q
What does DNA polymerase do?
A
It builds up the DNA strands
4
Q
How does semi-conservative replication work?
A
DNA helicase breaks hydrogen bonds linking base pairs of DNA
Double helix separates and unwinds
Matching nucleotides from a new strand join onto the old strand assisted by the enzyme DNA polymerase
Each DNA molecule contains half a new strand and half an old strand
