1.9 Enzyme inhibition Flashcards
1
Q
What are the two types of enzyme inhibitors?
A
- Competitive inhibitors
- Non-competitive inhibitors
2
Q
What is a competitive inhibitor?
A
One which binds to the active site of the enzyme
3
Q
What is a non-competitive inhibitor?
A
One which binds to the enzyme at the position other than the active site.
4
Q
What reduces the effect of a competitive inhibitor?
A
An increased substrate concentration.
5
Q
What does the non-competitive inhibitor do to an enzyme?
A
- It binds onto the enzyme (not at the active site) and prevents the normal enzyme-substrate complex to be formed, as the active site is changed, this reduces the rate of reaction.
