2.2: Control & Communication (Nervous) Flashcards
What does the nervous system consist of?
2
- Central nervous system (CNS)
- Nerves
What does the central nervous system consist of?
2
- Brain
- Spinal cord
What are the parts of the brain?
3
- Cerebrum
- Cerebellum
- Medulla
What is the function of the cerebrum
Memory and Reasoning
What is the function of the cerebellum?
Balance and co-ordination
What is the function of the medulla?
Breathing and heart rate
How do neurons carry signals?
By electrical impulses
What are the three types of neurons in order?
- Sensory Neuron
- Inter Neuron
- Motor Neuron
What is the function of the sensory neuron?
To pass information from a receptor to the CNS
What is the function of the inter neuron?
Allow information from the senses to be processed
What is the function of the motor neuron?
To carry electrical impulses from the CNS to an effector (muscle or gland) which enables a response
What are synapses?
Gaps between neurons that are unable to be crossed by electrical impulses.
How is the signal transferred across the synapse?
By chemicals
What are receptors?
Cells that can detect a stimulus and change this signal into an electrical impulse to send to the brain
What are effectors?
Enable a response to occur - response is either a movement (muscle) or a chemical/hormone is released (gland)
