1.2: Transport Across Membranes Flashcards
What are cell membranes made from?
They are made from phospholipids, proteins and are selectively permeable
What is passive transport?
Transport that occurs down a concentration gradient and does not require energy
What are the two types of passive transport?
Diffusion and Osmosis
What is diffusion?
The movement of molecules down a concentration gradient from a higher to a lower concentration
What is osmosis?
The movement of water molecules from a higher water concentration to a lower water concentration
What happens when an animal cell is placed in a salty/sugary solution?
Water will move out of the cell by osmosis and it will shrink
What happens when an animal cell is placed in pure water?
Water will move into the cell by osmosis and it will burst
What happens when a plant cell is placed into a salty/sugary solution?
Water will move out of the cell by osmosis and it will become plasmolysed
What happens when a plant cell is placed in pure water?
Water will move into the cell by osmosis and it will become turgid
What is active transport?
The movement of molecules against the concentration gradient that requires energy
Why does active transport require energy?
For membrane proteins to move molecules and ions against the concentration gradient
