2.2: Control & Communication (Hormonal) Flashcards
1
Q
What does the endocrine system produce?
A
Hormones
2
Q
What are hormones?
A
Chemical messengers made from protein
3
Q
What is a target tissue?
A
Cells with complementary receptor proteins for specific hormones
4
Q
How do hormones travel to the target tissue?
A
The target tissues have cells with complementary receptor proteins. The receptors are specific for hormones, so only that tissue will be affected
5
Q
What hormones control glucose levels in the blood?
A
Insulin & Glucagon
6
Q
What happens when there is an increase in glucose concentration?
4
A
- Pancreas makes insulin and releases it into the bloodstream
- Insulin targets the liver tissue
- Liver converts glucose into glycocogen
- Glucose levels return to normal
7
Q
What happens when there is an decrease in glucose concentration?
4
A
- Pancreas makes glucagon and releases it into the bloodstream
- Glucagon targets the liver tissue
- The liver breaks down glycogen to glucose
- Glucose levels return to normal
