2.2 Communities and Ecosystems Flashcards
Community
a group of populations living and interacting with each other in an ecosystem
Ecosystem
a community and the physical environment it interacts with
Respiration
the process of creating energy through the chemical process of turning organic matter into CO2 and water
Photosynthesis
the process of producing raw material that is used for making biomass
Producer
an organism that creates its own food
Consumer
an organism that consumes other organisms to obtain energy
Decomposer
an organism that decomposes organic matter
Food Web
a system of foodchains in an ecosystem
1st Law of Thermodynamics
energy is neither created nor destroyed, only changes forms
2nd Law of Thermodynamics
the entropy of a system increases over time
Biomass
organic material that comes from plants and animals
Bioaccumilation
the build up of non biodegradable pollutants in an ecosystem or trophic level because they cannot be broken down
Biomagnification
the increase in concentration of non biodegradable pollutants in a food chain
Ecological Pyramid
a model that illustrate the differences that exist from trophic level to trophic level in an ecosystem
Entropy
Entropy is a measure of the amount of disorder in a system. An increase in entropy arising from energy transformations reduces the energy available to do work.
