1.3 Equilibrium and Energy Flashcards
First Law of Thermodynamics
Energy cannot be created nor destroyed
Second Law of Thermodynamics
Entropy of an isolated system always increases
Entropy
A measure of disorder in a system
Stable Equilibrium
An equilibrium that returns to normal after something is displaced
Steady State Equilibrium
there are inputs and outputs of energy and matter, but the whole system remains relatively constant
Negative Feedback Loop
Stable - they tend to neutralize or counteract any change away from the equilibrium.
Positive Feedback Loop
Unstable - they tend to amplify changes and drive the system towards a tipping point
Resilience
The amount of disorder that an ecosystem can effectively manage
Tipping Point
the point at which a series of small changes or incidents becomes significant enough to cause a larger, more important change.
