2.2 Blood vessels Flashcards
compare where the L & R common carotids and subclavian arteries come from
L- aorta
R- brachiocephalic trunk
importance of carotid triangle
-carotid sinus massage
-central pulse
-atheroscelrosis
-access for vagus nerve
-central line access
-contains IJV
amaurosis fugax
transient loss of vision due to atherosclerosis of carotid artery causing embolus
carotid endarterectomy
incision into carotid to remove atherosclerotic plaque, reduces stroke risk
temporal arteritis
superficial temporal artery
-frequent severe headaches
-scalp tenderness over temple
-jaw pain when eating/talking
-visual changes
key branches of maxillary artery, and their roles
-middle meningeal artery (dura mater)
-sphenopalatine artery (nose bleeds)
how does middle meningeal artery enter the skull?
deep to zygomatic arch, enters via foramen spinosum
what make up retromandibular vein?
superficial temporal vein and occipital vein
why IJV not EJV for JVP?
doesn’t branch in the neck so more accurate BP of superior vena cava and right atrium
also EJV is valved
