United Nations Declaration Of Human Rights (UNDHR)
30 human rights which are universal, countries are required to respect them. Ignorance of these rights could be used to justify military/economic intervention
European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR)
18 articles and 14 protocols which have been integrated into the national laws of Council of Europe member states
UK Human Rights Act (1998)
ECHR into UK law - it required public bodies to act according to the ECHR
This was criticised by successive conservative governments
Impacts Of UNDHR
Provides framework for international law
Aid often tied to countries upholding human rights - recipients of aid must demonstrate rights are upheld.
Provides justification for intervention - to protect human rights.
Controversies Of UNDHR
Authoritarian countries human rights with little consequence
When should and shouldn’t international intervention take place
Erosion of national sovereignty - Brexit now planning for new Bill
Allows difficult ideas e.g. votes for prisoners, overturning of abortion laws
