2.1 Atoms, Elements And Compounds Flashcards
What is matter
Any substance that has mass and occupies volume
What can we classify matter into
Pure substances-element/compound
Mixture-homogenous/hetrogenous
What is a pure substance
All the particles within the substance are the same
What is an element
Substance made from only one type of atom(all containing the same protons)
What is a compound
Substance made from different types of elements chemically bound together
What is a mixture
Physical combo of 2+ substances that can be separated by physical means
What is a homogenous mixture
A mixture of substances in the same phase-cannot distinguish between the layers.
What is a heterogeneous mixture
A mixture of substances in different phases-easily distinguishable between layers.
What is an ion
Atom or group of atoms that has gained or lost electrons
What determines the mass of an atom
The nucleons
Define the term isotope
Atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons
Difference between elements compounds and mixtures
Elements are the simplest substance that cannot be broken down further using chemical methods, compounds are 2 or more elements chemically bonded and mixtures are 2+ substances chemically combined together
