When would you use trim automation rather than standard automation?
To add a relative change to existing automation.
What is the difference between touch mode, latch mode, and touch/latch mode?
Touch - writes when touched and returns when released
Latch - writes when touched and continues until manually automatched or playback ends.
Touch/latch - volume in touch mode, all others in latch
What modifiers would you use to show the automation graph for a parameter such as volume or pan by clicking on the corresponding on-screen control (fader or pan knob)?
Control cmd click
How can you display multiple automation playlists for a track? How can you resize an individual automation lane?
Show/hide lanes button
Click and drags the bottom of any lane
Or
Click on the vertical zoom scale and select height.
These options will resize all lanes.
What is the purpose of setting the automatch time preference?
Sets the time it takes for automation to return to previous automation level when released (touch mode)
What is the difference between global automatch and channel automatch? What is the difference between these and parameter automatch?
Global automatch forces all currently writing parameters back to their previous automation levels
Channel automatch - all parameters of a given track return to their original levels
Individual parameter automatch - applies to a single parameter
Describe four different ways to enable plug-in parameters for automation. Which methods apply to existing plugins? Which apply only to plugins that are subsequently instantiated?
Current plugins:
Click the plugin automation enable button, add parameters
Control option cmd click on a plugin control
Control option cmd click on the automation enable button in a plugin window
New instances of plugins:
Enable plugin parameters. Default to auto enable in the mixing tab of the pro tools preferences dialog box
What are some options for extend currently writing parameters to specific points during playback using the manual write automation commands? How are these commands different from the write on stop commands?
Click the appropriate button in the automation window.

What are two ways to toggle the automation follows edit setting in pro tools? When would it be useful to disable automation follows edit?
Automation follows edit button in edit window toolbar
Options>automation follows edit
Useful for replacing audio but keeping automation
How can you paste automation from one parameter to another parameter?
Cut/copy special, paste special (to current automation type)
How is the trim tool useful for editing automation? When will trimming affect only a portion of the track?
Make selection, trim up or down
Hold option to avoid creating breakpoints at ends of selection
When clicking within a single clip when no selection is active
What modifier keys would you use when adding a breakpoint with the grabber tool to constrain the breakpoint to the previous automation value? What modifiers would you use to constrain the breakpoint to the next automation value?

Why might you suspend a single automation parameter on a track rather than turning automation off on the track?
Ex: When you want to suspend pan but retain volume automation
