2 Volcanic Activity Flashcards
What is magma
Hot liquid rock and metals
What is volcanic
This is a term used to describe extrusive features
What is plutonic
This is a term used to describe intrusive features
What is an island arc
A chain of volcanic islands formed at the subduction zone of two oceanic plates.
Japaneese island arc- Pacific and Eurasian plates
What is a volcanic arc
A chain of volcanic mountains formed at the subduction zone of a colliding continental and oceanic plate
The Andes Volcanic Arc- Nazca playe subducts under South American
What is a mid-ocean ridge
When two oceanic plates separate magma rises through fissures in the earths crust. When the magma comes in contact with the ocen water, the lava turns to solid rock. Overtime this builds up to form a mid-ocean ridge.
Mid Atlantic Ridge ICELAND
How was Mount Kilimanjaro formed
Rising magma plumes caused the continental African crust to stretch and split. Magma rose through fissures in the crust which formed the volcano Mnt Kilimanjaro
What are hotspots
Hotspots are regions of the earths mantle where the magma is hotter than the magma in the mantle surrounding it. They are located in a fixed spot in the mantle while the crust moves over it.
What is pyocrastic flow
A mixture of hot steam, dust, ash and cinders
What are cinders
Small volcanic bombs
Whats an Active Volcano
Erupts regularly
Mount Etna Sicily
Whats a Dormant volcano
Havent erupted in a long time but could erupt again
Parcutin Mexico
Whats an Extinct volcano
Havent erupted in over 2000 years and arent expected to erupt again due to lack of magma supply
Lambay Island off of Irelands Coast
What are extrusive volcanic features
Volcanic features on the earths crust
What are intrusive plutonic features
Features in the internal rock structure of the earths cryst
