The collarbone
Where does the clavicle extend between?
Sternum and acromion of the scapula
What type of bone is the clavicle classed as?
Long bone
What are the three main functions of the clavicle?
- Attaches upper limb to trunk
- Protects underlying neurovascular structures supplying upper limb
- Transmits froce from upper limb to axial skeleton
What shape is the clavicle?
An S shape
Medial aspect is concave
Lateral aspect is convex
What is the function of the large facet at the sternal end of the clavicle?
Articulation with manubrium of sternum - sternoclavicular joint
What does the inferior surface of the sternal end of the clavicle have on it?
Oval depressions fro the costoclavicular ligament - sternoclavicular joint
What is the function of the shaft of the clavicle?
Point of origin and attachment for muscles
Which muscles are attached to the shaft of the clavicle?
Deltoid
Trapezius
Subclavius
Pectoralis major
Sternocleidomastoid
Sternohyoid
What is on the acromial end of the clavicle?
Small facet for articulation with acromion of scapula
Acromioclavicular joint
What two ligaments attach to the acromial end of the clavicle?
Conoid ligament - onto conoid tubercle
Trapezius ligament - onto trapezoid line (lateral part of coracoclavicular ligament)
What is the weakest part of the clavicle?
Between middle and lateral thirds of clavicle
