2 (Student Presentation) - Classification of Antibiotics based on Type Of Action Flashcards
Classification on ABXs based on type of action
Bactericidal (target cell wall and cell membrane to inhibit synthesis and cause death) and bacteriostatic (inhibit bacterial growth through interfering protein synthesis and DNA replication)
Examples of bactericidal antibiotics
Carbapenems (Imipenem), Aminoglycosides (Gentamicin and Tobramycin), Quinoles and Fluoroquinolones (levofloxacin), Glycopeptide (Vancomycine)
Examples of bacteriostatic antibiotics
Tetracycline, macrolide, lincosamide, chloramphenicol
Why is there no clear distinction between bacteriostatic and bactericidal agents?
High conc of bacteriostatic agents –> bactericidal agents
Low conc of bactericidal agents –> bacteriostatic agents
