2- CPR: basic life support Flashcards
How long does brain death occur within
4-6 mins
3 signs of cardio-pulmonary arrest
Loss of consciousness
Apnoea or agonal gasping
No, corneal reflex/palpebral reflex
No heart sounds, no palpable pulse
MM white/blue
What is the first step when a patient is unresponsive or in cardio-pulmonary arrest?
Basic life support immediately:
Chest compressions & Ventillation
Name the 2 types of chest compressions & what size animals they are used in
Cardiac pump = small dogs/cats under 10kg
Thoracic pump = over 10kg
When giving brachycephalic breeds CPR what is different?
Give CPR over sternum
How many bpm are you looking to get in a cardiac pump?
100-120bpm
How long do you do chest compressions & ventilation for?
2 mins
How many bpm are you looking to get in a thoracic pump?
60-120 bpm
What is positive pressure ventilation (PPV)?
Artificial ventilation - breathing for the animal
What rate should you aim to ventilate at?
10bpm = don’t want to cause oxygen toxicity
How many compressions vs breaths of ventilation should you give in a cycle?
30 compressions & 2 breaths over a 2 min period
How much do you aim to compress with thoracic pump
Widest part of the chest, compress to 1/3-1/2 the width
How does thoracic pump work
Works through changing intrathoracic pressures
