2. Cells and Tissues Flashcards
(21 cards)
What are three things that the lipid bilayer is highly permeable to?
- O2
- CO2
- steroids
What are 2 things that the lipid bilayer is moderately permeable to?
- Water
- Urea
Define Concentration gradient and Electric Gradient
Concentration gradient: The difference in concentration of a CHEMICAL in and out of cell
Electrical gradient: The difference in concentration
of an ION in and out of cell
What are the two general types of transport across the membrane?
Active and passive
Describe passive processes
- Substance moving from higher to lower concentration (down electrochemical gradient)
- Requires no energy
What are 3 examples of passive processes?
- Simple diffusion
- Facilitated diffusion (requires ion channel)
- Osmosis
Describe Active processes
Requires cellular energy to move a substance against electrochemical gradient
What are 3 types of active processes?
- Active transport (NaK pump)
- Vesicular transport
- Endo/exocytosis
What are 3 functions of connective tissue?
- Stores fat (energy)
- Binds together, supports, and strengthens other tissue
- Main source of immune responses
What are the 5 types of mature connective tissue?
- Loose connective tissue (adipose)
- Dense Connective tissue
- Cartilage
- Bone Tissue (compact/cortical and spongy/trabecular)
- Liquid connective tissue (blood and lymph)
What are the 3 types of dense connective tissue?
- Tendons
- Ligaments
- Aponeuroses
What are the three types of cartilage connective tissue?
- Hyaline Cartilage
- Fibrocartilage
- Elastic Cartilage
What is a strain?
Damage to tendon
What is a sprain?
Damage to ligament
Define tendon and ligament (what they join to)
Tendon: Joins muscle to bone
-Fibres run parallel
Ligament: Joins bone to bone
-Fibres crisscross
Define aponeuroses
They are sheetlike tendons that connect MUSCLE TO MUSCLE or MUSCLE TO BONE
What is the strongest type of cartilage?
Fibrocartilage
What type of connective tissue does not have blood vessels or nerves in the ECM?
Cartilage
Give 3 examples of fibrocartilage
Pubic symphysis, meniscus, IV discs
Give 2 examples of hyaline cartilage
Ribs, nose
Give 2 examples of Elastic Cartilage
Epiglottis, part of the ear
