What does ABCD stand for?
Airway
Breathing
Circulation
Deadly bleeding
Principles for checking Airway:
Speaking, moaning, crying.
If unresponsive perform a head-tilt/chin-lift
Principles for checking Breathing:
Check for 5-10 seconds.
Chest is rising and falling.
Speaking or crying.
Principles for checking Circulation:
Check head to toe quickly for bleeding or blueness. or cold/clammy. Pulse.
Principles for checking Deadly bleeding:
Check head to toe quickly by touch and check hands for blood.
What is the recovery position?
Placed onto side
Why use the recovery position?
If ABC’s are okay and person is unresponsive or altered responsiveness.
Protects from vomit or choking.
How do you roll someone into the recovery position?
Support/protect the head.
Raise bottom arm above shoulder.
Roll as a unit until body stays safely in position.
Check ABC’s again.
Rolling someone over who is face down?
Support/protect head.
2 assistants on roll side interlocking
1 assistant on other side to help with head as you adjust
Arm above head.
Roll as a unit, stopping half way to adjust head hold with ass’t if necessary

Plan
Define the S in SOAP:
Subjective assessment - signs, symptoms, medical history, allergies, last meal/exit, what happened. Ask bystander if unresponsive.
Define the O in SOAP:
Objective assessment - Vital signs, head to toe rapid check, focused exam if unresponsive
Define the A in SOAP:
Assessment summary and anticipated concerns: Record findings and problems. Include all details like situation, weather, environment, group members, etc
Define the P in SOAP:
Plan: Write out the plan to address the condition including transport or extended care plans. Know location prior to calling for help.
What should always be checked on an injured or ill person also?

What three things should be monitored on a person over the course of time?
Level of responsiveness LOR, breathing, skin colour.
Define a focused exam on a responsive person.
Explain purpose of exam.
Ask what hurts or feels uncomfortable.
Look at areas identified closely for signs.
Ask focused questions about how the person feels.
Base the Plan on what three priority levels?
Minor, Major, Critical
What factors are used in determining priority level?
Nature and severity of condition.
Physical and psychological condition of everyone.
Equipment available and evacuation risks.
Time it would take to evacuate.
If someone is dead, what does the scene become?
Crime scene (legal)
If someone is dead, what should be done?
Cover body but do not touch it any more. Write everything down. Photograph Send messengers to contact authorities Care for the emotional needs of the group.
