List the 4 types of poisonings.
Inhaled
Swallowed
Absorbed
Injected
2 key factors in dealing with poisons.
Wear PPE.
Call poison control centre or EMS.
Signs of inhaled poison:
Breathing difficulties.
Irritated eyes, nose, throat.
Bluish colour around mouth.
Unusual smell in air.
Care for inhaled poison:
Move person to fresh air.
Do not enter area yourself.
Signs of swallowed poison: (5)
Open poison container nearby.
Burns around mouth.
Increased saline or discoloured saliva.
Abdominal cramps, vomiting and/or diarrhea.
Burning sensation in mouth, throat or stomach.
4 steps to care for swallowed poison.
Check poison package for type.
Induce vomiting if instructed by EMS/PC.
If no help then dilute poison by drinking water.
Bring sample to hospital.
Signs of absorbed poison. (4)
Rash or hives.
Burning or itching skin.
Blisters.
Burns.
5 steps to care for absorbed poison.
Brush off if dry powder.
Remove clothing covered in poison.
Flush skin safely for 15 minutes with clean water.
Apply dressing and bandage.
If rash/weeping apply baking sofa/water paste several times per day.
6 examples of poisonous plants.
Poison ivy. Giant Hogweed. Poison oak. Giant hogweed leaves. Poison sumac. Wild parsnip.
Signs of injected poison (4)
One or more puncture wounds.
Problems breathing.
Redness and swelling at entry point.
A needle found nearby.
Care for injected poison?
Wash puncture site with clean water.
Keep person still
Draw line around rash/discolouration to help monitor.
