2: Anaemia of Chronic Disease Flashcards
What is anaemia of chronic disease
Anaemia dueto chronic inflammation
How can anaemia of chronic disease be divided
- Inflammatory
- Infectious
- Malignant
What inflammatory conditions can cause anaemia of chronic disease
SLE
RA
What infectious conditions can cause anaemia of chronic disease
TB
What malignancies are associated with anaemia of chronic disease
Lymphoma
Lung Cancer
Breast Cancer
What type of anaemia is present in anaemia of chronic disease and how does this relate to symptoms
Anaemia is usually mild - meaning there is mild symptoms
What is hepcidin
Hepcidin is an acute phase reactant produced by macrophages in response to inflammation. It prevents iron absorption in the gut and reduces circulating iron
What is the role of hepcidin
It’s aim is to reduce circulating iron available to bacteria, by doing this it increases iron in stores leading to a relative anaemia
What type of anaemia does anaemia of chronic disease cause
- Normocytic progresses to microcytic
How will serum iron present in anaemia of chronic disease and why
- Low: as hepcidin reduces iron absorption in the gut and concentration of circulating iron
How will transferrin saturation present in anaemia of chronic disease and why
- Low: as hepcidin decreases circulating transferrin to reduce iron available for bacteria to bind
How will TIBC present in anaemia of chronic disease and why
