What is the connection between periodontal disease and chronic kidney disease? - Umbrella review
He et al JPR
Umbrella review
n=18 studies
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) defined by:
* One or more markers of kidney damage
* decreased GFR <60 mL/min / 1.73 m2
* Or, both of the above (at least 3 months’ duration)
Results:
“A bi-directional relationship exists between CKD and periodontitis;” however, Weak evidence demonstrating NSPT improves kidney functions.
Lots of heterogeneity in included studies
What is the in vitro study into 3 different PRF preparations for osteogenesis potential?
Kosmidis et al. JPR
- L-PRF: Leukocyte platelet-rich fibrin: the “standard” PRF.
- A-PRF: Advanced Platelet-rich fibrin. Generated with a lower RCF (rotary centrifugal force). It has a porous fibrin structure which traps platelets and leukocytes
- i-PRF: injfectable PRF: even lower RCF; obtains a liquid material which can be used alone or mixed with other grafts before clotting.
Study aims to compare these 3 PRF’s for osteogenesis in vitro
6 male patients - collected samples and pre-cultured for 6 days. Seeded osteoblasts and cultured either with conditioned medium from the 3 PRF’s, or with regular culture medium.
Evaluated osteogenic capacity of cells at 0, 7, 14, 21, 28 days.
RESULTS:
* RUNX-2 indicates higher number of mature osteoblasts in A-PRF and L-PRF.
*However, A-PRF and L-PRF may slow down the calcification process.
* i-PRF increases activity of alkaline phosphatase = promotes differentiation of the osteoblasts.
Cross-sectional study
Describe the study oxidative stress markers in the gingival crevicular fluid of pregnant women with gestational diabetes, vs. healthy pregnant women
Results:
SSD in oxidative stress marker levels (TAS/TOS) in the pregnant women with gestational diabetes.
Is there an association between sickle cell disease and periodontal disease? - systematic review
Batista da Silva et al. JPR
Systematic review
n= 13 (for qualitative report), but n = 9 for quantitative analysis
Results:
Gingival index was significantly higher in sickle cell patients.
However: No association between sickle cell disease and periodontitis.
What is the association between androgenetic alopecia and periodontitis?
Karasu et al JPR
Cross-sectional study
n= 385
Prevalence by age of androgenetic aloplecia:
* 25-34 yrs: 25%
* 35-44 yrs: 74%
* 45-54 yrs: 92%
* 55-65 yrs : 91%
Results:
SSD association with aloplecia and periodontitis the 25-34 and the 35-44 year group.
Note: Oral hygiene and smoking were not assessed
Describe how HbA1c is affected by amoxicillin & metronodazole as an adjunct to SRP
Xu et al JPR
- 26 patients in test group (SPT + 500 mg metronidazole + 500 mg amoxicillin TID for 7 days
- 23 patients in control: SPT only
3 mo followup
RESULTS: NSSD in HbA1c between the groups.
