1.d- Periodic table Flashcards
how are elements arranged in the periodic table
- order of atomic no ( no. of electrons)
2. groups and periods
what are the vertical columns on a periodic table called
groups
what are the rows on a periodic table called
periods
what does the group no. tell you
no. of outer electrons
why do elements in the same group of the periodic table have similar chemical properties
they have same no. of electrons on the outer shell
what do the properties of the elements depend on
no. of electrons ( = to atomic no. , that’s why arranged by atomic no.)
what does the period no. tell you
the no. of shells
what is group 0 called
noble gasses
what is special about the noble gasses
they are inert gasses and colourless
definition of inert
unreactive ( don’t react much)
why are the noble gases inert
they have a fuller outer shell of electrons = not desperate to give up or loose electrons.
describe metal oxides
they are basic = neutralise acids
metal oxides which dissolve will form a solution with pH of more than 7
describe non metal oxides
they are acidic = neutralise bases
metal oxides which dissolve in water to form a solution with pH of less than 7
how is a periodic table split into metals and non metals
metals on left of zig zag
non metals on right of the zig zag
