19.3 Controlling Position Of Equilibrium Flashcards
What happens to position of equilibrium if concentration is increased?
Equilibrium position moves away from the substance
What happens to position of equilibrium if pressure is increased?
Equilibrium position shifts towards the side with fewer moles
What happens to position of equilibrium if temperature is increased?
Equilibrium shifts in the direction of the endothermic reaction
What does K value of 1 mean?
Equilibrium is halfway between reactants and products
K greater than 1
Shows equilibrium in favour of products
K value of less than 1
Equilibrium position towards the reactants
What happens to K at a set temperature?
K does not change, even if concentration or pressure changes, and if there is a catalyst present
Only condition that causes K to change
Temperature change
K value when temperature is changed for exothermic reactions
Temperature increase - K decreases
Temperature decrease - K increases
When forward reaction is exothermic and temperature is increased, what happens to Kp?
If temperature increases, Kp also increases
Pressure has to change, so pressure of reactants decrease, and pressure of products increase
Therefore, yield will increase
A + B >< C
If concentration of A is doubled, what happens?
Kp stays constant
Pressures of A and B must decrease and pressure of C must increase
Product formed has increased and so has the yield
