11.1 Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What are organic compounds?
Compounds with the element Carbon
Why is Carbon so special?
It’s in group 14 of the periodic table, and has 4 electrons in the outer shell
Each Carbon atom can form 4 covalent bonds to other atoms, single, double or triple
Carbon atoms can bond to other Carbon atoms to form long chains
What is a hydrocarbon?
A compound containing Carbon and Hydrogen only
What is a saturated hydrocarbon?
A saturated hydrocarbon has single bonds only
What is an unsaturated hydrocarbon?
Contains at least one carbon to carbon double bond
What is a homologous series?
A family of organic compounds with similar chemical properties, follow a trend in physical properties, have the same functional group and each successive member differs by a CH2 group
What is a functional group?
Part of an organic molecule that is responsible for the molecule’s chemical properties
