19.1 Populations and ecosystems Flashcards
Define ecosystems:
all of the living and non living components of a particular area
Define abiotic:
ecological factor that makes up part of the non-biological environment of an organism
abiotic examples:
- temperature
- pH
- light intensity
define biotic
ecological factor that makes up part of the living environment of an organism
biotic examples
- food availability
- predation
- competition
- space
define population
a group of individuals of the same species that occupy the same habitat at the same time
define habitat
the place where an organism normally lives
what is a habitat characterised by
- physical conditions
- the types of other organisms present
define species
a group of similar organisms that can breed to produce fertile offspring
define community
all the living organisms present in an ecosystem at a given time
define niche
how an organisms fits into its environment
- what a species is like
- where it occurs
- how it behaves
- its interactions with other species
- how it responds to its environment
