17.3 5 Polyesters Flashcards
differences between addition and condensation polymerisation
In condensation polymerisation each time two monomers join together another small molecule is produced and usually two different monomers react together
examples of small molecules formed
water and hydrogen chloride
Reagents
A diol with two hydroxyl groups at either end
H-O-CH2-CH2-O-H
Dicarboxylic acid normally terephthalic acid which is two carboxylic acid groups with a benzene ring in the middle

polymer formed
terylene
polyesters uses
soft drink bottles , food packaging ,many types of clothing and duvet fillings
Possible to use
a dioyl chloride instead of a dicarboxylic acid although not uses as a monomer in industry only difference is HCl forms instead of water
