16.3 Plant responses to herbivory Flashcards
what is herbivory?
when a plant is eaten by a herbivore
what are the physical defences a plant may have?
thorns
barbs
spikes
inedible tissue
hairy leaves
stings
what are the chemical defences a plant may produce?
tannins
alkaloids
terpenoids
tannins
have a bitter taste puts animals off from eating a plant’s leaves
also toxic to insects by inactivating digestive enzymes in an insect’s saliva
alkaloids
many act as drugs by affecting the metabolism of predatory animals and poisoning them
can deter or kill
terpenoids
act as toxins by interfering with the predator’s nervous system
what are pheromones?
chemicals made by an organism which affects the social behaviour of other members
how can pheromones be used in plant defence?
they are produced and cause leaves to produce callose to protect the plant from attack
what is a VOC?
volatile organic compounds
acts as pheromones between themselves and other organisms
when are VOCs produced?
when a plant detects an attack by an insect
how does cabbage use VOCs?
they release VOCs when attacked by caterpillars
this attracts parasitic wasps which lay their eggs in the cabbage
eggs hatch and the new parasitic wasps eat the caterpillars
which plant folds in response to touch?
Mimosa pudica
what happens when Mimosa pudica is touched?
a signal is spread across the whole plant causing the leaves to fold up
what does a plant folding do?
scare predators
help knock off any insects on the plant
