Q

What train-borne equipment is fitted for use in a fire scenario? Explain the automatic and manual system.

A

Fire bottles activate at 3mph (auto)

If bottle do not automatically activate,
Use manual pull cord.
Ensue you take up the slack cord then pull firmly.
If still not out - use portable fire extinguisher 🧯

17
Q

What could be indicated by the driver-guard buzzer sounding continuously?

A

DKS active
(Two keys in drivers desks)

18
Q

If a train fault light we’re to illuminate on moving the DDS from N to F, what initial action should the driver take?

A

Move the selector from N to F to R - at least 6 times to try and clear the fault.

19
Q

The train fault light is still lit after moving the drive selector from F to N to R - over six times what action may you need to take?

A

Possible gearbox/transmission fault

Check light (drivers cab and internal MOS ) to confirm which vehicle
Isolate gearbox, switch off engine
Restart engine to see if fault clears

20
Q

How can you access a vehicle if there is NO res air supply?

A

Find Bowden cable
Pull cable to release doors
Push doors apart
Ensure you reset Bowden cable and close cover plate

21
Q

How is a defective door locked out of use?

A

Insert a T key into upper area and turn once to expel air. Turn again to lock door.
Door not in use will illuminate
Ground level lights will extinguish

22
Q

With specific reference to a class 15x, how should the driver respond to experiencing wheel slip (when taking power)

Describe the indications received and explain the operation of the relevant on-train equipment.

A

Reduce power notches - less power

Use sand if necessary

Allow wheels to gain traction over time before increasing power

(Train light) will illuminate
Engine revs will drop
If unit light illuminates then report to signaller

23
Q

When driving a 15X how should the driver respond to wheel-slide when braking?

What indications will the driver receive and the relevant on-train equipment?

A

Increase braking (auto sanding)

Puffing sound where air is expelled
Speedometer fluctuation
If needed full emergency brake

24
Q

Give 5 causes of an engine or engines failing to start, or an engine or engines stopping, and for each the indicate initial checks that could be made to determine if it is the cause?

A

Low fuel
Low engine oil
Shore supply still attached
Low coolant level
Coolant overheating (engines switch off or idle)
Faulty engine button

25
Q

If the auxiliary batteries on the rear vehicle of a class, 15X train are not being charged, what will be the eventual outcome?
What actions are then required?

A

Loss of rear tail lights

Use remote switch to take part from another vehicle.

Move passengers to another vehicle with a full lighting

26
Q

Give five causes of an unsolicited brake application or of been unable to release the brakes?

A

TPWS brake demand
Egress pulled
Passcomm activated
Brake control MCB tripped
Low air pressure
Division

27
Q

In the event of an unsolicited brake demand, what must be the first check the driver makes?

A

Check the TPWS panel

The check of this panel is due to timing. The panel lights will extinguish through time.

28
Q

If still unable to release the brakes after fault finding, how can you brake demand be overridden?

A

Activate the EBS - when authorised

29
Q

If the EBS has been activated what controls/equipment will no longer function to stop the train?

A

Passcomm
Emergency plunger

30
Q

You are driving a 4-car 150/2 train and you notice the following:

Unit and train lights lit
Sluggish performance
Possible smoke from area around the bogie on lead vehicle
Bodyside indicator light NOT lit.

A

Dragging brake

31
Q

If you have identified a dragging brake what must your actions be?

A

Stop train
Contact signaller
Cut and run policy

32
Q

How could you ultimately resolve a dragging brake?

A

Isolate the brake using the BCIC (sealed) with authority

33
Q

You have identified the dragging brake but no assisting train is available to proceed. What rule applies if you have a rigid bar coupler?

A

The 1 in 5 rule
Train can proceed, reduced speed, to 1st suitable location where passengers must be removed.
