15.19 Powerplant Installation Flashcards
What is a firewall?
A partition between the power plant and aircraft.
What is the purpose of a firewall?
To isolate the power plant from airframe structure.
What material are firewalls made off?
Stainless steel of other high heat resistant material.
What are the 3 engine zones?
Fire zone
Flammable fluid leakage zone.
Dry bay zone.
Why do engine pods incorporate zones?
To minimise fire probability and isolate a fire.
Cowlings protect the engine and are streamlines. What is another design feature?
They route cooling air effectively.
What is the disadvantage of using acoustic panels?
Add weight.
What are thrust reverser cowls known as?
C-Duct cowls
How are engine mounts designed?
To allow expansion in both radial and axial directions.
What do side mounted engines use?
Front and rear saddle type beams.
How are the saddle type beams connected to the engine mounting points?
Swinging links and thrust trunnions.
What must you ensure about hoses and lines?
That they do not chafe.
What must be avoided in flexible lines?
Tight bends
If wires can’t be clamped what is used for extra protection?
Grommets or chafe strips.
Where must wires be routed?
Away from high temperature equipment.
