Community Order/ Suspended Sentence Order requirements
Prior to the Offender Management Act 2007, there were also Supervision and Specified activity Requirements.
Supervision: Up to 3 years
Activity requirement: up to 20 days, to address ETE or to attend a Womens’ Group.
These were replaced by the Rehabilitation Activity Requirement under the Offender Rehabilitation Act 2014 , which can require a person to undertake a specified activity or to attend a specified place and comply with instructions from the person in authority there.
Activities may include:
Accredited programmes
Activities with a reparative purpose, such as Restorative Justice
Resettlement/Licences
Adult prisoners (<12 months): Focus on immediate release accommodation and employment
Adult prisoners (>12 months): More comprehensive, still includes ETE and accommodation but may also include further personal change interventions
All Young Offenders (18-21): Similar to above, but greater emphasis on education and re-establishing positive relationships with family
Parole decisions on sentences 4 years or more: Focus shifts to managing risks in the community, though still with focus on reinforcing personal change.
Public Protection Sentences: Control of offender to ensure risks are managed as closely as possible – increased surveillance, including use of electronic monitoring and restrictive conditions, such as disclosing developing relationships.
Lifers: Focus on reintegration back into society after a long period in custody – lifer release is challenging and begins in the last few years in custody with reductions in prison categorisation, day releases and temporary home visits to get used to life in the community.
