Refers to levels of authority within a organisation.
What is chain of commad?
Formal line of authority that flows down from top management to lower levels.
Why is a chain of command useful?
Establishes clear communication within organisation.

Number of people someone is personally responsible for.

More layers of management, less people to be responsible and accounted for.

Decision making is concentrated from the top of organisation ( senior managers )

Decision making is spread throughout the organization with lower levels of employees having more authority.

Top layer consists of fewer staff to communicate to and they are higher skilled.

They lack authority.
Why will workers be more motivated as decentralised?
They feel more empowered as they take initiative
