- pattern of employment has changed

- large majority earning lower wages
what reasons relate to why companies need to dispense staff
- individuals may lack the competence to carry out their duties effectively
- economic or other factors depress demand in an industry, forcing them to cut costs to break even
- competitive businesses cause companies to lose market share in a way that forces out staff
what is redundancy
- workers job no longer exists or firm is undergoing a restructure
- is sometimes voluntary (gains a payout)

what is dismissal
workers may be dismissed or fired because of:
- absenteeism
- misconduct
- theft of company money or product
- not entitled to a payout
