1.4 Function Of The Heart Flashcards
What happens once the ventricles have filled?
Contract in a squeezing action from the bottom of the heart upwards.
Forces blood up against tricuspid and bicuspid valves, closing them. Once blood has left ventricles they relax and start to open up again. Back flow of blood is prevented by the semi-lunar valves snapping shut.
‘Lub’ ‘dup’
What is systole?
Ventricles contract
What is diastole?
Ventricles relax, atria filling
What is the cardiac cycle?
Coordinated flow of blood through heart.
Difference between the left and right ventricle wall
Left ventricle wall Is much thicker than right. Right side is less muscular to prevent blood from entering the lungs under too much pressure. If it did, water from the blood would be forced into the air spaces of the loans, effectively drowning us.
What happens after blood enters each atrium?
Once full, contracts, pushing the blood down into the ventricles through the tricuspid and bicuspid valves.
