1.1 Composition Of Blood Flashcards
What are leukocytes?
White blood cells
Consist of neutrophils, lymphocytes and monocytes
What are erythrocytes?
Red blood cells
Function of plasma
Transport dissolved substances
Nutrients needed for energy, make proteins, for essential processes
Blood protein needed to maintain fluid levels and involved in clotting
Proteins are made by the immune system
Proteins that carry fats/cholesterol
A poisonous waste gas
Example- sodium- Helps maintain correct concentration of the blood.
Function of erythrocytes
Carry oxygen and some carbon dioxide
What is the yellow liquid known as?
Plasma-makes up 55% of the blood
What substances are in plasma?
Mostly water but has substances dissolved in it including proteins, glucose, amino acid’s, various salts, carbon dioxide and other poisonous wastes such as urea.
What are platelets?
Tiny fragments of special cells known as platelets
Function of leukocytes?
Helps destroy bacteria
B-Type cells produce antibodies
T-type cells destroy viruses and cancer cells
Remove dead cells and bacteria
Function of platelets
Triggers blood clotting
What is the machine called a small sample of blood is spun very fast in?
A centrifuge
