Network Protocol
An agreed way of how to communicate over a network
Uniform Resource Locators/URLs
The full address of an internet source
Domain Name System/DNS
Identifies the area or domain that an internet resource resides in
Internet protocol / IP address
A unique address that is assigned to a network device
WAN / Wide area network
Connects 2 or more LANs that are in different geographical locations
LAN / Local area network
Networked devices that are physically close together
Circuit switching
Creates a direct link between two devices of the duration of the communication
Packet switching
A method of communicating packets of data across a network that has other communication happening simultaneously
Router
Used to connect at least 2 networks
TCP/IP stack
Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol.
A set of network protocols that work together as 4 connected layers
Firewalls
A security checkpoint that prevents unauthorised access between 2 networks
Proxy servers
Intercepts all packets entering and leaving a network, hiding the true network addresses of the source
Encryption
One way of making messages travelling over the internet secure
Server
A computer dedicated to proving a service to users across a network
