Input device
A piece of hardware used to enter data into a computer or similar processing device. E.g, keyboard, mouse.
Output device
A piece of hardware used to output information from a computer or similar processing device. E.g, printer, projector.
Storage device
Any median which holds data or programs (optical, magnetic, solid state)
Magnetic storage
Uses minute magnetic particles or ‘domains’ to store data, E.g, hard disk
Optical storage
Storage that uses plastic disks where data is stored as patterns on the surface, in pits and lands.
E.g, CD, DVD, blu-ray disks
Flash storage
Holds data using electronic switches. E.g, USB sticks
RAM
RAM is used as main memory. It acts as temporary storage for program instructions and data. It can only store things temporarily because it is volatile
ROM (Read Only Memory)
ROM cannot be changed, overwritten or removed. It is non volatile
Virtual storage
Extending backup storage by using backing storage as if it were main memory. E.g, hard disk
