Q

High diversity definition

A

Associated with a stable ecosystem and a complex food web

17
Q

Low diversity definition

A

Associated with an unstable ecosystem and a less complex food web

18
Q

Explain primary succession

A

The pioneer community are lichens and as they die they decompose they provide enough nutrients to support a small community of plants (mosses). erosion of the rock increases and the organic material builds up, allowing grasses to grow. The climax community is woodland and therefore a stable community is achieved.

19
Q

Describe and explain how succession occurs

A
  1. Colonisation by lichens
  2. Change in environment
  3. Enables marram grass to colonise and survive
  4. Changes in diversity
  5. Stability and biodiversity increases
  6. Climax community represented by woodland
20
Q

When does secondary succession occur?

A

After a forest fire or clearance of agricultural land
Doesn’t start with a pioneer species but instead an intermediate seres

21
Q

What is deflected succession?

A

Occurs when the climax community is prevented from establishing as a result of management practices by humans

22
Q

Plagioclimax definition

A

Climax stage of community which is influenced by humans
