13.2 Flashcards
Principles of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
Explain LCA Phase 1 - Raw Material Acquisition:
This phase includes all of the activities required to gather or obtain the raw materials. It also includes the transportation of the raw materials to the point of manufacture.
Explain LCA Phase 2 - Manufacturing:
Material Manufacture - The activities required to process a raw material into a form that can be used to fabricate the product.
Product Fabrication - The process steps that use raw materials to create the product.
Filling/Packing/Distribution - Processes that prepare the final products for distribution.
Explain LCA Phase 3 - Use/Reuse/Maintenance
This phase begins after the distribution of
products for intended use and includes any activity in which the product may be
reconditioned, maintained or serviced to extend its useful life.
Explain LCA Phase 4 - Recycle/Waste Management
This phase begins after the product has
served its intended purpose and is scheduled for disposal into the waste stream either through recycling or via a waste management system.
When is a building product considered more sustainable?
If it can demonstrate that it can reduce the environmental impact at a specific stage of the product life cycle compared to similar products.
- The more recycled material it has, the less the environmental impact it has
What is the environmental impact criteria and example products for LCA Phase 1?
- Renewable Resources (certified wood, agri-fiber, wood and cotton fibers, strawboard products)
- Recycled Content (Mineral fiber ceiling tiles, fiberglass insulation, rubber carpet under cushion, plastic curb stops)
- Remanufactured Products (office furniture, mechanical equipment, kitchen equipment)
What is the environmental impact criteria and example products for LCA Phase 2?
- Reduced Toxicity (adhesives, paint, cleaning supplies)
- Ozone Depletion (refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, office seating, foam insulation)
What is the environmental impact criteria and example products for LCA Phase 3?
Part 1
- Energy Efficiency (office equipment, mechanical equipment, lighting)
- Energy Savings (weather stripping, windows and doors, automated control systems, solar gains, high tech insulation)
- Reduced Water Consumption (toilets, grey water for landscaping)
What is the environmental impact criteria and example products for LCA Phase 3?
Part 2
- Reduce Volatile Organic Products (paints/adhesives, carpets, furniture, foundation coatings)
- Reduce Formaldehyde Emissions (engineered wood products, insulation, furniture)
- Antimicrobial and Fungicide Qualities (paint, mixed-on-site drywall compounds, natural fibre products that adjust to humidity)
