What is retention?
- Goal to keep valuable and talented employees working w/in the organization
- Effort of a business to create a working environment that supports employees to stay in that company and not to leave
Define onboarding
- Ongoing process from the 1st day of hire until the employee is well established in the organization
- Specific to the employee
Define orientation
- General overview
- Introduces employee to the organizations culture, products, values and required paperwork
- Part of the onboarding process
General focus of onboarding vs. orientation
- Onboarding –> employee’s specific role in his or her department
- Orientation –> employee’s role at the company
Duration of onboarding vs. orientation
- Onboarding –> ongoing (could last a few months)
- Orientation –> one-time event

- Onboarding –> on the job
- Orientation –> classroom or online

- Onboarding –> specific to each new employee
- Orientation –> general overview

When does onboarding begin? What does it include?
- Ideally beings when the job offer is made
- Includes:
- Intro to management and co-workers
- Learning company’s strategic plan, goals and culture
- A mentor or support person throughout the learning process
- Regular follow-up on progress
What is training?
- Organized process designed to improve performance through learning
- Involves formal processes that provide knowledge and guidance to employees in order to acquire the necessary skills for the job
- Designed to achieve specific goals
- Focus is on practice, specific info
What are some training methods?
- Instructor-led classroom training
- Interactive methods -> includes group activities w/in classroom learning
- Hands-on training -> requires focus which improves retention
- Computer based and e-learning training
- Video training
- Coaching and mentoring
Pros of instructor-led classroom teaching
- Allows for personal interaction
- All trainees proceed at same pace
Pros and cons of computer-based training
- No facilitator required
- Difficult to determine if employee is engaged
What training methods are used in pharmacy?
- On-the-job training
- Internship
- Informal learning (learning from others during discussions)
- Computer based training
What is the difference between base pay and contingent pay?
- Base pay = rate of pay for the job
- Contingent pay = payment added to base pay (bonus)
