Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
Following regulation is required once a private employer reaches 15 or more employees?
A civil rights law enacted in 1990 that prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities. It also prescribes a number of accessibility standards that architects must observe in the design of buildings.
Architect of record
The architect who prepares, signs, and seals the construction documents for a particular project that are prepared under their responsible control.
Breach of contract
When a party to a contract does not follow through with responsibilities outlined in the contract.
Canons (AIA Ethics)
Broad principles of conduct as defined by the AIA Code of Ethics. There are six within the document: general obligations, obligations to the public, obligations to the client, obligations to the profession, obligations to colleagues, and obligations to the environment.
Ethical Standards (AIA Ethics)
Specific goals towards which AIA members should aspire to be in compliance with the AIA Code of Ethics. These standards exist for each canon in the Code of Ethics.
Model Law and Regulations
A guide published by NCARB for individual jurisdictions to use as a foundation when creating their regulations relating to the practice of architecture.
Model Rules of Conduct
An NCARB-published set of ethical requirements that individual jurisdictions use to craft their own requirements for maintaining licensure within their jurisdiction.
National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB)
The board that advises the 55 individual jurisdictions in the U.S. on issues related to licensure, as well as administering the ARE and AXP. They publish the Model Law and Regulations as well as the Model Rules of Conduct.
Professional code of conduct
Any set of rules governing the behavior and comportment of professionals as they carry out their work. An example is the AIA Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.
Rules (AIA Ethics)
Mandatory requirements that AIA members must comply with in order to be in compliance with the AIA Code of Ethics. These rules exist for each canon in the Code of Ethics.
Impartiality
is when an architect must render a decision that does not favor one party over another.
Full disclosure
is when a member should disclose if they have a financial interest in an architectural decision such as a being part owner of a window company whose windows they specify.
