1.2 Transport Across the cell membrane Flashcards
What 2 molecules is the cell membrane made of?
The cell membrane consists of Phospholipids and Proteins
What does the term selectively permeable mean?
only allows certain molecules through
What is passive transport?
Passive transport occurs down a concentration gradient and does not need energy, eg: osmosis and diffusion
what is diffusion?
Diffusion is the movement of molecules down a concentration gradient from a higher concentration to a lower concentration
what is osmosis?
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a higher water concentration to a lower water concentration through a selectively permeable membrane
what does turgid mean?
turgid means for a plant Cell to become swollen/ Bloated
What does plasmolysed mean?
When the cell membrane pulls away from the cell wall in a plant cell
what happens to an animal cell when it is placed in a concentrated solution.
water moves out by osmosis and the cell shrinks
What is active transport?
Active transport is the movement of molecules and ions against the concentration gradient and requires energy.
What happens to an animal cell when placed in a pure water solution?
water moves in by osmosis and the animal cell bursts.
what happens to a plant cell when placed in a pure water solution?
water moves in by osmosis and the plant cell becomes turgid.
what happens to a plant cell when placed in a pure solute concentration?
water moves out by osmosis and the cell becomes plasmolysed
