11.8 Fire Protection Flashcards
What are the two parts of the fire protection systems
- Fire detection system
- Fire extinguishing system
When must fire detection systems be operative
When ever Fuel is being burned (engines and APU)
Where are additional fire detection systems installed
Avionics bay, pneumatic ducts and lavatories
What 3 parts do all fire and overheat detection systems have
- A sensor
- A control unit
- The panels for warnings
What is a spot sensor
A simple method for fire or overheat detection
Consists of a bi-metallic type switch, it triggers an alarm when it closes due to heat
Only used for pneumatic duct leak detection
What two types of continuous loops are used
Semiconductor loop and pneumatic pressure loop
What are names for semiconductor loops
Kiddie, graviner, Edison and fenwal which are all manufacturers names
How do semiconductor loops work
Each loop has a metal tube that contains a semiconductor material.
The material decreases its electrical resistance with increasing temperature
What is the pneumatic pressure loop also called
Systron and Donner loop
How does the pneumatic loop work
It has a sealed tube which contains gas.
The pressure of the gas increases with temperature
What are the two types of smoke detectors used on aircraft
The Optical system and the Ionisation type
What does the Ionisation type smoke detector detect smoke
Uses a radioactive source to detect gas that is caused by fire
