11.3 Aeroplane Structures Cat A Flashcards
What are the two types of fuselage construction
- Monocoque construction
- Semi monocoque construction
What does the monocoque construction consist of
Uses frame assemblies and bulkheads to give shape to the fuselage and the aircraft skin is riveted directly on to the frame
What is the biggest problem with the monocoque construction
Maintaining enough strength in the skin whilst keeping the weight down
What does the semi monocoque consist of
The skin shares the load with the stringers, frames with an additional clip
Has a good strength to rigidity ratio
What components does the fuselage mainframe consist of
Frames, bulkheads, stringers, floor beams, floor to skin shear ties and a keel beam
When frames are used in constructing the fuselage they are normally spaced how far apart
20 inches apart
Where are bulkheads located
Nose and tail of the fuselage, the wheel well and the wings
What component gives shape to the fuselage shell
Stringers
What is the purpose of the keel beam
It supports the wheel well area where a maximum amount of bending can occur and can transport wing loads
What is fillet sealing
Applying a bead of extrudable sealant to seams, joints and intersecting planes and surfaces
What is the purpose of injection seals
Used to fill holes, joggles, channels or other voids
What type of seals are fitted to the main entry doors
- Flap type mechanical
- Diaphragm seals
What are the seat tracks known as
L tracks
What is a Unit Load Device (ULD)
Is a pallet or container used to load luggage, freight and main on to wide body aircraft
