The draft for men to fight in the war.
Anyone could be selected, but the rich could pay their way out of it and hire a replacement

A northern democrat who opposed the war and wanted to end it
What was the meaning of Habeas Corpus? Why was it significant?
Meant no one could be imprisoned without evidence/proven charges.
Suspended during the war so people who showed disloyalty to the war effort could be arrested by the Union (Copperheads)

Nursed military soldiers during the Civil War

Both the North and South.
The poor rioted over conscription; couldn’t pay $300 to hire someone else

How did the role of women change?
Women worked as nurses and helped the soldiers.
Some worked as spies.
