What gas is generally used in incandescent lamps?
Nitrogen, argon or krypton
Describe how an incandescent light works
Light is produced by allowing a high current to flow through a conductor which heats up to the extent that light is radiated
What is used to prevent a soot deposit and improve the stability of the filament?
A halogen incandescent lamp
A gas discharge light is also known as?
a fluorescent tube
What determines a gas discharge lamps colour?
The type of gas, aircraft ones are filled with mercury gas which produces UV light, so a fluorescent coating is added
What colours are the navigation lights?
Port - Red
Starboard - Green
Tail - White
Through what arcs must the navigation lights be visible?
port and starboard - directly ahead to 110 degrees round either side
aft light - 70 deg either side of centre line (140 degrees)
What are the dangers associated with HISL (anti-collision light)?
High voltage from capacitors, fash can damage the eye
What two colours are generally used for anti-collision lights?
White and red
how are landing lights cooled?
By the airstream
What is the purpose of a landing light?
To illuminate the area ahead of the aircraft during the final stages of landing
How is the brightness of cockpit lighting controlled?
By the use of dimmer switch to suit ambient light levels
Which specific areas are required to have emergency lighting?
The cabin doors and emergency exits
Emergency lights have what to allow them to continue to operate?
Individual battery packs so they can run for at least 10 mins
What are the three positions for emergency lighting and what do they mean?
OFF - System deenergised
ON - Lights are on steady
ARMED - Lights are off (on standby) and come on in the event of power failure
