11.02 Airframe Structures General Concepts Flashcards
What is fail safe design?
Ensures if one member fais, another would assume the strain
What is the problem of fail safe design?
Additional weight
What is damage tolerance?
Structure is designed so that damage can be detected during normal inspection cycles. There is load path sharing
What is fatigue index?
An accurate prediction of how long, in terms of life and fatigue, an aircraft can remain in service
what is monocoque construction?
Uses formers, frames and bulkheads to give shape, skin carries primary stresses
what is semi-monocoque construction?
Uses formes, frames and bulkheads to give shape, skin is reinforced by longerons and stringers
In a semi-monocoque construction, how are pressure loads shared?
Between the skin and the structure
What is safe life?
The period in which a failure of a component is considered highly unlikely
What three surface pre-treatment techniques are used on aluminium?
anodizing, chemical conversion coating and wash primer
What is a body station?
It is a vertical plane at right angles to the body centreline, normally measured from a point in front of the nose of the aircraft
What is a waterline?
A horizontal plane at right angles to the body stations
What is the abbreviation BBL short for?
Body buttock line
In which zone are the engines found?
400
Undercarriage doors are classified in which zonal area?
700
What provides surface protection on aluminium alloys?
Pre-treatments and paint
