11 - Sustainability Flashcards
What is sustainability
Meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
What is sustainable development?
Sustainable development is development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Aims to meet human development goals while also enabling natural systems to provide necessary natural resources and ecosystem services to humans. The desired result is a society where living conditions and resources meet human needs without undermining the planetary integrity and stability of the natural system
3 principles of sustainability are social, environmental and economic
What are the triple bottom line principles
Economic, social and environmental
What does the NPPF (national planning policy framework) say about sustainable development?
The purpose of the planning system is to contribute to the achievement of sustainable development. Can be summarised as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
The 3 objectives social, economic and environmental are interdependent and need to be approached in mutually supported ways.
Plans and decisions should apply a presumption in favour of sustainable development
Can you tell me about any Climate Change Conventions or Protocols you
are aware of?
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change - established an international environmental treaty to combat “dangerous human interference with the climate system”, in part by stabilizing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere
called for ongoing scientific research and regular meetings, negotiations, and future policy agreements to enable economic development in a sustainable matter.
Net Zero Strategy: policies and proposals for decarbonising all sectors of the UK economy to meet our net zero target by 2050.
Clean growth strategy: ambitious UK strategy achieving clean growth, while. ensuring an affordable energy.
What targets did one of these conventions/protocols set?
(follow on from: Can you tell me about any Climate Change Conventions or Protocols you
are aware of?)
Net Zero aims to achieve net zero by 2050, including minimum EPC C Rating or above by 2025.
What are the most recent EU / UK targets relating to sustainability?
Net zero by 2050
EPC C rating or above by 2025
What is the Paris Agreement?
Sets out a global framework to avoid dangerous climate changes by limiting global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius
Under the Agreement each country must determine, plan and regularly report on the contribution that it undertakes to mitigate climate change.
What was the Kyoto Protocol and what were it’s targets?
Came into force 2005
An agreement linked to the UN framework convention, commits parties to setting internationally binding emission reduction targets
A stricter policy on developed nations
An agreement to lower the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere.
Reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 5% against 1990 levels
What are the 2020 targets
Reducing greenhouse gas omissions by 20% (compared to 1990’s levels)
What are the EU 2030 targets
To cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 in preparation for 2050 net zero target
What are the EU 2050 targets
Climate-neutral by 2050 – an economy with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions
What is an EPC?
Energy performance certificate
Rates who energy efficiency of a building
What buildings require an EPC?
You must have an EPC if:
-you rent out or sell the premises
-a building under construction is finished
An EPC is only required when a building is constructed, sold or rented. For a building to require an Energy Performance Certificate is must have a roof, walls and use energy to energy to condition the indoor climate. It should therefore have fixed space heating , ventilation and / or cooling.
When is an EPC required?
Before you market your property to sell or rent
Valid for 10 years
