11. Oogenesis Flashcards
Growing follicles (transfer of yolk materials from plasma to ovarian follicle)
Oogenesis
major source of yolk protein and
phospholipids
Liver
Maximum # of mature eggs laid by a hen
1,500 eggs
Undergo full development
(a lot undergo ovulation)
ovarian follicles (4-10 mm)
Degenerates & become atretic
ovarian follicles (<4 mm)
increase of abdominal contraction causes this
Bearing Down Reflex / OVIPOSITION
FACTORS AFFECTING OVIPOSITION
- Number of eggs laid in a given time
- Sequence in which eggs are laid
- Intervals in sequence of egg
- Lighting (controlled in layer farms to maximize egg laying)
Loosing of feathers which occurs once a year for 4-6 weeks if exposed to natural lighting.
Afterwards, birds would start laying eggs again.
- Can be artificially induced by stress
MOLTING
CHARACTERISTICS OF MOLTING CHICKEN:
- Inhibition of ovulation
- Inhibition of oviposition
- Regression of reproductive tract
- Decreased blood levels of reproductive hormones (LH, progesterone)
AVIAN PARENTAL BEHAVIOR
- Nest building
- Incubation of eggs
- Brooding new hatchlings
- Taking care of the young
- Protection from predators
used to bypass insulation (feathers) of parent to promote induction of heat from body to eggs
Simply, intentional losing of feathers to conduct body heat to eggs
brooding patch
Begin incubation with last egg laid and eggs hatch synchronously
synchronous hatching
