10.1. Establishment of pregnancy Flashcards
Establishment of pregnancy of which animal?
The embryo is being transported here in the ipsilateral uterus.
This is the same side where the ovum is ovulated and fertilized.
COW
Establishment of pregnancy of which animal?
The zygote moves between the ipsilateral-contralateral uterus, eventually being implanted.
MARE
Establishment of pregnancy of which animal?
The blastocyst that was formed in the ipsilateral uterus would be implanted in the ipsilateral side. It means that if it is in the right ovary, and the right oviduct, the fetuses or the blastocyst would be implanted in the right uterine horn.
Same on the left side.
SOW (litter bearing animal)
Development of extraembryonic or fetal membranes:
in young embryos:
yolk sac: ____
allantois: ____
yolk sac: bigger
allantois: smaller
Development of extraembryonic or fetal membranes:
in older embryos:
yolk sac: ____
allantois: ____
amniotic cavity: ___
chorio-allantois: ____
yolk sac: smaller
allantois: bigger
amniotic cavity: smaller
chorio-allantois: placenta
Functions of fetal membranes:
this provides nutrients for embryo (early stage)
yolk sac
Functions of fetal membranes:
this protects fetus from injury, provides lubrication for parturition, reservoir for urine & waste
amnion
Functions of fetal membranes:
carries blood vessel of placenta reservoir for nutrients & wastes
umbilical cord - attaches fetus to allantois
allantois
Functions of fetal membranes:
this absorbs nutrients from uterus
allows maternal-fetal gas exchange
chorion + allantois = placenta
secretes hormones
chorion
(2) animals with animals with ENDOTHELIOCHORAL & ZONARY type of placenta
give their length of gestation
- bitch (64)**
- queen (65)
(2) animals with ENDOTHELIOCHORAL & DIFFUSE type of placenta
give their length of gestation
- mare (345)**
- sow (114)
(3) animals with SYNDESMOCHORIAL & COTYLEDONARY type of placenta
give their length of gestation
- cow (280)
- ewe (147)
- doe (147)
Types of placenta attachment:
chorion fuses to endometrium (ex. SOW)
Superficial
Types of placenta attachment:
embryo invades endometrium & develops in the endometrium
Interstitial
Types of placenta attachment:
outward attachment
(ex. LARGE ruminants)
